Living with ankyloing spondylitis

What is ankylosing spondylitis?

Ankylosing spondylitis (or AS for short) is a chronic, progressive, painful inflammatory rheumatic disease, which affects the spinal joints, in particular those at the base of the spine (the sacroiliac joints and the lumbar spine).

My ankylosing spondylitis symptoms

The symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis began to appear after a small accident in 1997. I was seventeen then. My father and uncle had ankylosing spondylitis. Initially, no one suspected arthritis at this early age. Early ankylosing spondylitis symptoms included lower back pain and stiffness. Initially, the pain started after some kind of exertion or strain like jogging or skipping. At first it was intermittent or on one side only or a alternate between sides. Gradually the lower back became stiff and painful. My other general ankylosing spondylitis symptoms included morning stiffness around lower back, pain when turning to the sides while lying down and difficulty in standing up after sitting or lying down for a long time. Slowly I was not able to run few steps or stand for a long time. My body temperature stood above normal temperature at around 99 degree. After around seven to eight years of acute pain around sacroiliac joint, the pain slowly diminished as the joint fused. Slowly my socket and ball joint started affecting with ankylosing spondylitis. Last year my hip joint was replaced due to persistant chronic pain.

The ankylosing spondylitis symptoms that my father and uncle experienced were slightly different from mine. The first symptom that my father experienced was pain on the outer side of his thigh while my uncle felt pain deep in the buttock area. My father was cured taking Salazopyrine, Indomethacin and Betnasol tablets. My uncle was cured with Ayurvedic medicines. Unfortunately while writing this blog I'm Still suffering pain due to ankylosing spondylitis. Hence I'm writing this blog so that people who suffer with ankylosing spondylitis shouldn't commit the mistakes I have committed.

Treatment for ankylosing spondylitis

Initially I was put on Sulfasalazine and Indomethacin tablets which kept the symptoms in slight control though i still had morning stiffness and pain when I ran few steps. My erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) ranged between 40 and 120 mm/hr. My HLA B27 blood test is found to be positive. I have tried different approaches including Ayurveda, Boswellia Serrata, Aloe Vera, Nicotinamide, glucosamide, MSM, chondroitin and Infliximab infusion.
